virtual water：仮想水
Explanation 用語の説明
☆definition：the water embedded in a product, the total amount of water used directly and indirectly consumed during the process of its production.
アンソニー・アラン教授が紹介した概念。海外から輸入している食料を生産するとしたら、どの程度の水が必要かを推定したもの。例えば、1kg のトウモロコシを生産するには1,800 リットルの水が、牛肉1kg を生産するには、生育に大量の穀物消費が必要なため、その約20,000 倍もの水が必要になる。食料を海外輸入に大きく依存する日本は、形を変えて生産国の水を大量に輸入していることになる。海外の水不足に、日本は決して無関係とは言えない。
